April 1, 2025 (Honolulu, Hawaiʻi) – On April 8, 2019, the Micronesian community lost a deeply respected advocate, mentor, and leader—Dr. Joakim “Jojo” Peter. A tireless champion for Compact of Free Association (COFA) citizens, Jojo dedicated his life to the pursuit of justice, access to education, and the empowerment of his community.

In recognition of his lifelong contributions, the Dr. Joakim Peter Memorial Scholarship was established to uplift and support emerging Micronesian leaders from the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM), the Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI), and the Republic of Palau. Since its founding, the scholarship has been awarded to thirteen exceptional student leaders—proudly recognized as A+JOJO Scholars.

The “A+JOJO” name is inspired by the Chuukese word Achocho, meaning resiliency, which reflects the same strength and perseverance that Jojo embodied throughout his life.

Now Accepting Applications for the 2025 A+JOJO Scholarship!

To honor Jojo’s enduring legacy, the 2025 A+JOJO Scholarship is now open for applications. This scholarship recognizes Micronesian youth leaders—either current college students or high school seniors—who demonstrate leadership and a commitment to making a positive impact in their communities.

We encourage all eligible youth to apply and share how they are carrying forward Jojo’s legacy of advocacy and service.

Support Jojo’s Legacy

The A+JOJO Scholarship is made possible through generous donations to We Are Oceania (WAO), a Hawaiʻi-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit that Jojo co-founded. Contributions directly support the next generation of Micronesian leaders, ensuring that Jojo’s vision for educational equity and community leadership continues for years to come.

Please help us spread the word by sharing this opportunity with students and supporters in your community—and consider contributing to this meaningful cause.
